Cast iron soil pipe is available in two main types - no-hub (or hubless - the most common) and hub (or hub and spigot). The only difference between the two is that the hub version has a short, larger-diameter portion of the pipe which accepts the spigot (or the no-hub), allowing to assemble the pipe in series without using couplings (see below).
No-hub cast iron pipe is available in standard Service (SV) type only - the most common and widely used type for DWV applications in residential (from single family homes to apartment buildings) and commercial drainage projects. These pipes utilize metal shielded
no-hub couplings made to CISPI 301 standard.
Hub & spigot cast iron pipe is available in (2) types - Service (SV) and the Extra-Heavy type (XH). The latter has thicker walls and different dimensions. If it is necessary to join SV and XH soil pipes,
transition couplings should be used. Extra heavy cast iron pipe is generally used for municipal applications.
All of the above listed commonly use various
hangers and support clamps to secure and support horizontal and vertical pipe runs.
Nominal size - commonly used for identifying pipe size.
OD - Outside Diameter of the pipe.
ID - Inside Diameter of the pipe.
Wall Thickness - denotes the thickness of the pipe wall.
