The information below is for ASTM A53, Grade A standard seam-welded and seamless black and galvanized pipe and pipe nipples.
Both
Schedule 40 galvanized pipe &
Sch 40 black pipe are compatible and most commonly used with class 150
galvanized and class 150
black malleable iron pipe fittings respectively. Both Sch 40 black pipe and class 150 black fittings are the most common types used in the USA for residential and commercial distribution of gas, for hot water boiler piping, decorative applications (such as industrial furniture) and many others due to their attractive cost, ease of use and proven track record. For gas-only applications, Sch 40 black pipe is also compatible with
carbon steel gas press fittings, such as the ones made by Viega and others.
Schedule 80 pipe is most commonly used together with class 300 fittings and is intended mostly for industrial & high-pressure applications.
All threaded ends meet ANSI B1.20.1 When connecting threaded pipe and fittings,
PTFE tape and/or
thread sealant is required.
A variety of
hangers and clamps are available for supporting both horizontal (wall or ceiling) and vertical (through the floor) pipe runs.
To minimize heat loss in hot water and steam applications, steel pipe can be used in conjunction with pipe insulation.
Foam pipe insulation is a common and economical solution for insulating pipes carrying hot water.
Fiberglass pipe insulation is an common solution both for steam pipes and for applications requiring fire code compliant insulation.
Nominal size - commonly used for identifying pipe size.
OD - Outside Diameter of the pipe.
ID - Inside Diameter of the pipe.
Wall Thickness - denotes the thickness of the pipe wall.
