1/2 inch backflow preventer
My original valve had stared to leak a lot, the dripping from the vent was increasing . A rebuild kit for this valve was double the cost of a new replacement valve model BFP-90-1/2 from Pex Universe. Installation was easy with a few common tools and some teflon tape for the threaded parts. A few drops of water escaped from the vent when i turned the water supply back on to my boiler but that is normal and i checked again several days later and the new valve is working perfectly. This backflow preventer appears to be well made and heavily constructed as well if not better than the original. It is solidly built of brass/bronze and a few internal stainless steel components. I opted for a new unit rather than rebuild my old unit after reading about the units that continue to leak after being rebuilt.

I just had to replace one of these used on the make-up water supply of an on-demand boiler in a radiant heat system. I wish it lasted longer, but given how hard our water is here, five years is not bad.

What is supposed to thread into the top port?

It's actually a bottom port, the picture is done so as to show it better. It is a vent opening (standard on all such backflow devices), into which a piece of pipe is threaded to discharge the water in the event of backflow or device malfunction.
